1968-1970+ 340 hp EXHAUST MANIFOLD GASKET INSTALLATION GUIDANCE

1) Inspect manifold and head mating surface for flatness with a straight edge. Gasket mating surfaces must be within 0.008” using a feeler gauge. If not, consult with your automotive machine shop to bring into specification. All gasket mating surfaces should be free from pitting and rust.

2) You must use correct fasteners with conical washers for installation.

3) Install heat shield and gasket assembly to head over outboard studs.

4) Install exhaust manifold.

5) Lubricate all threads and under bolt/nut head with anti-seize lubricant or recommended fastener lubricant and install hand tight. Lubrication ensures correct fastener tension.

6) Starting from center working outward, torque all fasteners to a final torque of 20 ft-lb. We start incrementally at 10 ft-lb progressing to a final torque of 20 ft-lb. Check by repeating torque sequence to ensure all fasteners have reached 20 ft-lb.

7) Run engine until it reaches operating temperature and once cooled recheck fastener torque in proper sequence. It is normal to see a 5 ft-lb drop off after heat cycling. Retorque to 20 ft-lb as necessary.
